How Severe is the Hunger Problem Worldwide?

  • 20 million people die each year from hunger-related causes, 13 million of whom are children.
  • Approximately 35,000 children die each day due to hunger-related causes. This is equivalent to three 747’s crashing every hour, every day, all year long.
  • The loss of human life from hunger is greater than if an atomic bomb were to be dropped on a densely populated area every three days.
  • One in every five people worldwide is hunger—more than 841 million people (more than double the population of the United States) suffer from chronic malnutrition.

Where are the Hungry People?

  • A disproportionately large number of the hungry live in sub-Saharan Africa, where nearly half the population cannot afford enough food to work, and one-quarter cannot obtain enough food for adult subsistence and child growth.
  • In Asia, 70% of the population lives in extreme poverty.

How Severe is the Hunger Problem in the United States?

  • 27 million Americans are suffering from hunger.
  • Hunger in the U.S. has increased by 50% since 1985.
  • Child mortality, which is closely related to hunger, is higher in the U.S. than in any other developed country.

Who are the Hungry in the United States?

  • One in three children suffer from hunger
  • The majority of hungry families are working families. At least one household member is employed in 60% of hungry households and almost half of hungry households have at least one full-time employee.

Why are there Hungry People?

Contrary to popular belief, there is more than enough food to feed the existing human population. Moreover, the world produces 10% more food than is needed to feed everyone. The problem, then, is one of priorities and organization.
