In the past, FSU Habitat has been involved in many activities, from
funding and building houses to participating in the Celebration of Lights
Parade. Of course, the chapter spends lots of time building houses—more
than five houses in a typical year! In addition to regular house builds,
FSU Habitat has socials, parties, volunteer events, trips, and special
events.
Some of the chapter's major events over the years have included the following: FSU MLK House 2000 Our chapter coordinated the first Habitat House sponsored and built by FSU students, organizations, faculty and administration in the Spring of 2000. Our organization was chosen as the service project for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on our campus and through the support of many FSU administrators, saw a family given the means of a house to build their home. The experience unified the campus as diverse groups and organizations who wouldn't normally interact, worked together side by side as part of its annual MLK celebrations. Pictures of the MLK house can be seen on the pictures page. Collegiate Challenge 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 Beginning in 1999, FSU Habitat has hosted an event
known as Collegiate Challenge. During four weeks in the Spring, students
from colleges across the nation spend their Spring Break building a Habitat
house in Tallahassee. As hosts, our chapter works with the
Tallahassee Affiliate and FAMU
Habitat to involve churches and international student groups in providing a
memorable and unique alternative Spring Break for those students willing to
sacrifice their week off for the good of others. The Collegiate Challenge
participants and chapter members spend Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
building a house. Wednesday is a free day, which they tend to spend at
Panama City Beach (and of course chapter members offer to chaperone them!).
This event is always a great success and lots of fun for everyone! |

This is our Fall 5K in which participants can take a
competitive run or an upbeat walk across campus. Goodies and prizes are
available for all winners and awards are given to top runners of each
category. T-Shirts are also included at registration for the normal rate.
Groups prices are also available for groups of 10 or more. A fun night of poker for any and all that have a
love for the game and a heart for charity. Donations are taken for play
and random drawings and prizes are given throughout the night. Our last
tournament featured gift certificates from many Tallahassee Shops and
Eateries, including Momo's, Publix, and a travel voucher from STA Travel.
Jail 'N Bail
Each Spring, FSU Habitat holds a fundraiser known as "Jail 'N Bail." This is a day long fundraiser in which prominent members of the campus community are "arrested" and must post "bail." Often the Campus Police will volunteer their time to drive around campus and perform the arrests. The criminals are then placed in a jail cell in the center of campus and provided with a phone so they may make the necessary arrangements to post bail. Past inmates have included Former FSU President Sandy D'Alemberte and SGA presidents. Trick Or Tools This event is our yearly Halloween fundraiser. Our members will go to a neighborhood the week before Halloween and flyer the neighborhood, asking for donations of money or tools. The next week they go back and collect the donations. This fundraiser has become fairly prosperous for FSU Habitat for Humanity, with donations of hammers, nails, other construction equipment, and a great deal of monetary donations.

Celebration of Lights Parade
Each Christmas season, FSU Habitat and the Tallahassee Affiliate participate in the Celebration of Lights Parade. FSU students enjoy marching through the streets of Tallahassee in the televised parade, which is attended by over 100,000 Tallahassee residents. Homecoming Parade 2001 Our chapter participated in FSU's homecoming parade by entering a float with other service groups from the Center for Civic Education and Service (CCES). Our float was made possible by the many hours and hard work put in by Tabitha, Adrienne, and Christian. |

Hunger and Homelessness Week (Nov. 13-16, 2000) Our chapter participated in this nationwide event to increase awareness of hunger and homelessness in our community, our country, and around the world. During the week, we showed films on the Union Green. After each show, people were available to answer questions and to tell viewers how to get involved. For additional information regarding hunger and homelessness, please see our fact sheet. Global Village and Discovery Center Other activities include trips to the Global Village and Discovery Center in Americus, GA (home of the Habitat for Humanity International headquarters). The Global Village is a 6-acre re-creation of the worldwide Habitat experience. Over several years, volunteers will build 40 houses that illustrate many of the materials and construction methods used in the 83 countries where Habitat is at work. A museum, market place, ethnic performances and examples of poverty housing add to the entertaining and educational experience. In 2002, FSU Habitat members built bricks which were assembled into houses from the countries of Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Members also had the amazing opportunity to hear former President Jimmy Carter speak. In addition to casual events, many social events are held within the campus chapter. Some recent examples include: camping trips, movie nights, holiday parties, campus wide scavenger hunts, leadership retreats, and many, many more. |
